Rwanda police officers sacked

Afrol News, 12 February - The Rwandan cabinet has sacked over 30 police officers for gross misconduct while on duty, a government statement says.
The Minister of Internal Security, Musa Fazil Harerimana, said sacking the officers was the beginning towards building a more professional police force that will serve Rwandans effectively.
"Those that have been fired by the Cabinet were appointed by the Cabinet, however, many more could still be fired by the police administration if that is what it takes to boost the force," he noted.
Those sacked included senior police officials Emmanuel Gakwaya, Jean Paul Ngabonziza, Jean damascene Karake as well as 32 other junior officers.
The police in Rwanda have come under sharp scrutiny following the recent attack and arrest of opposition officials as the country prepares for national polls.
Over the past 10 years, the Rwandan National Police has evolved into a professional force whose character is being recognised for its impeccable standards.
Though the process of professionalizing the force is a work in progress, according to government sources, Rwanda is already reaping the benefits of running an exemplary disciplined police force.
Since 2005, Rwanda has contributed 362 police peacekeepers in Africa and UN missions.
