Dear friends of Agaculama Mu Ikibunda (A.M.I),

You probably remember that between May 1994 and July 1995, floating bodies of Banyarwaanda have been observed on the Kagera river and Victoria Lake.

In early May 1994, the Ugandan Air Force estimated that nearly 40,000 dead bodies were floating on Victoria Lake.

Because the currents of Victoria Lake follow a clockwise rotation, all the floating corpses headed north-west to Uganda, and some of them got stranded on the muddy beaches of Uganda.

According to my inquiries, at least 11,136 corpes have been recovered by fishermen from the shores of Victoria Lake, in the districts of Rakai, Masaka and Mpigi. In the districtof Kalangala (Bugala, and Ssese Islands), the bodies remained tangled in the water hyacinth (Crassipes eichhornia) and floating papyrus networks that rendered impossible their recovery..

In the Kagera river Christian (protestant, lutherian) NGOs fished out some 917 bodies between July 1994 and July 1995. One should recall that the Rwandan genocide officially ended on July 3rd, 1994, the day the RPF captured Kigali-City.

The occupying authorities in Rwanda did not show any interest in these corpses until very lately. Since then, the Rwandan authorities have "tutsified" these corpses alleging that they are the bodies of Tutsi victims of the genocide against the Batuutsi in 1994.

I therefore ask all netters of good will to help me complete the ongoing investigation into the identity, the ubwooko and the actual geographical origin of these anonymous corpses. Any documents, website links, names of officials, members of NGOs or international agencies (UN-UNHCR, Red Cross, NGOs, etc.) who were present in the areas where the bodies were recovered, email addresses of known people who have toured the region (Ngara, Karagwe, Uganda, Akagera National Park, Milindi and Mpanga Lakes),testimonies, photographs of corpses, anecdotes (areas of controlled access by the RPA / RPF, "crash" of a UNAMIR helicopter, etc.), maps and other details are welcome because this is not an easy task.. Photographs of corpses constitute valuable pieces for analysis. Discretion and anonymity will be guaranteed for those of you who wish to. I ask each and every one of you to activate your personal networks of friends and correspondents in order to get a plentiful harvest.
