Rwanda: Genocide survivors denounce American lawyer defending Ingabire

Kigali: The umbrella group IBUKA demanded Thursday that Prof. Peter Erlinder should be brought to justice for “denying and negating” the Tutsi Genocide – also branding him as an enemy of Rwanda, RNA reports.
In a statement after RNA revealed Wednesday that Mr. Erlinder was in the country to prepare for the Ingabire Victoire trial, IBUKA said allowing the American lawyer into the country “hurts” the feelings of the survivors, and undermines Rwanda as a state.
According to IBUKA, Prof. Erlinder through publications and speeches does not accept the Tutsi Genocide, considers the people who stopped the slaughter as criminals and hosts meetings of “negationists”.
Accepting him in the country is continuing to hurt the survivors in total disregard of the painful history they lived, said IBUKA.
The group makes reference to a conference over the past weekend where defense attorneys of the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda converged. Several alleged Genocide fugitives were also at the conference in Brussels as speakers.
Government sent a diplomatic protest last week to the Belgian authorities over the meet but no response was given.
However, the survivors’ group said it can only denounce Prof. Erlinder, and it remains the responsibility of government to bring him to justice.
