The two aged 11 (boy) and 6 (girl) – from the same family died immediate following the blast in the house on Monday morning. Another 12-year-old girl who was a family friend visiting at the time is in critical condition at the Kigali Central Hospital, according to police and media reports.
Police said intensive investigations are still ongoing to ascertain where the grenade came from and how it ended up killing the children. There are no details at the moment, as the area officials and security personnel piece-together what happened.
Such security threats are rare in the country except for isolated cases that have happened previously. On Christmas day, two similar blasts happened in the southern province but with minor injuries on three people.
In September, another blast killed four and injured 52 in the same southern province. In July, another in Kigali injured a girl.
In December, another grenade blast injured 28 people in Kigali.
Police says there is no need for panic as these blasts occur as separate incidents.
