The main objective of the census of survivors of the genocide was to provide reliable and updated on the lives of this population group and thus enable the Government and the associations of genocide survivors to effectively assist vulnerable people such as orphans, widows and the disabled.

The size of the population of survivors of genocide amount to 309,368 people including almost 42% of men and 58% of women. The breakdown by district shows that the Districts of Gasabo and Rusizi are the most populous of the population of survivors and the District of Burera is the least.
