Stephen HARDtalk: Sackur talks to Rwanda's president, Paul Kagame.

By Stephen Sackur
Thursday, December 7, 2006

The following is a must see interview of Kagame with Stephen Sackur of the BBC.

For the first time, Kagame had to face a journalist on the BBC who really knew what he was talking about.

None of Kagame's usual arguments of having fought to liberate Rwanda would stop this journalist from cornering him, in spite of Kagame's multiple interruptions.

For 23 minutes, President Kagame had to give answers, in his manner, to very sensitive issues of the day, such as:

- The assassination of Juvenal Habyarimana
- Democracy muzzled- Bizimungu emprisonnement
- Supporting Congolese rebel Laurent Nkunda

In the spring of 1994 up to one million Rwandans were slaughtered in a modern day genocide.
Twelve years on, Rwanda's president, Paul Kagame, is in London on a mission to tell the world that his country has overcome its terrible past.

But President Kagame is, himself, dogged by that past.

A controversial report by an internationally respected judge has accused him of the political assassination which triggered the genocide.

How can he deliver in the face of such allegations?
